You've practiced three lenses for hearing notes in a key:

Three Lessons, One Map
You've practiced three lenses for hearing notes in a key:

Play any note below. Watch the path light up from the root through Calm/Tense (in the key vs. outside it), through the stability layer (Stable / Less Stable / Unstable), all the way down to the exact degree number โ or the specific chromatic note.
Try notes inside the key, then notes outside. Notice how the path changes.
What the Tree Shows
The tree has three levels:
โข Level 1 โ Calm or tense? Every note you play is either in the key (calm) or outside the key (tense). This is the broadest split.
โข Level 2 โ How stable? On the calm (in-key) side, notes split three ways: degrees 1, 3, 5 land solidly (stable, green); 2, 4, 6 create gentle motion (less stable, amber); and 7 strains hard to resolve (unstable, orange). On the tense (outside-the-key) side, each note sits in its own branch.
โข Level 3 โ The specific degree. Here you find the exact role: the calm 3, the restless 7, the sharp bite of โญ2. This is where ear training lives.
Say the Path Out Loud
Play a note, then say its full path before looking at the label. For example:
"Calm โ Stable โ 3"
"Calm โ Less Stable โ 4"
"Calm โ Unstable โ 7"
"Tense โ โญ2"
This is the mental motion of a fluent listener โ they don't just hear a pitch, they instantly read its position on the map.
The Map Travels
Here's the same tree in the key of G. Notice: the structure of the map is identical. The degree numbers stay the same. Only the actual pitches shift.
This is why trained musicians can hear 3 in any key โ the role is universal, the note is local.
