The Heartbeat

Every piece of music has a pulse - a steady beat underneath everything. Tap your foot or nod your head to find it.

That regular beat you're feeling? That's the pulse. It keeps going even when nothing is playing on it.

The Heartbeat

Every piece of music has a pulse - a steady beat underneath everything. Tap your foot or nod your head to find it.

That regular beat you're feeling? That's the pulse. It keeps going even when nothing is playing on it.

Tempo: Fast and Slow

The speed of the pulse is called tempo.

โ€ข Slow tempo = relaxed, contemplative, sad
โ€ข Fast tempo = energetic, exciting, happy

Tempo is measured in BPM (beats per minute). A ballad might be 60 BPM. A dance track might be 120+ BPM.

Conduct the Music

Tap along with music at different tempos. Your body learns to feel rhythm through physical movement.

Pulse is Universal

Every song has a pulse - from ancient drums to electronic music. Finding it is the first step to understanding any rhythm.

This week, consciously find the pulse in every song you hear. It'll become automatic.
