Syncopation: The Off-Beat Magic

Syncopation means putting emphasis on unexpected beats - usually the 'and' between main beats.

Normal: 1, 2, 3, 4
Syncopated: 1, AND, 2, AND, 3, AND, 4

Syncopation creates groove, swing, funk. It's what makes you dance.

Create Groove

Take a simple rhythm and add notes on the 'ands.' Feel how it transforms from boring to funky.

Syncopation Everywhere

โ€ข Jazz: Heavy syncopation
โ€ข Funk/R&B: Extreme syncopation
โ€ข Rock: Moderate syncopation
โ€ข March: Almost none

Listen for where notes land relative to the beat.
